Hi, friends! Today I will tell you how I prune my junipers.

⏳Best time to prune Junipers
- Early spring (before new growth begins) – ideal for major shaping and rejuvenation.
- Mid to late summer – for light touch-ups or shaping.
- Avoid late fall pruning because new growth may be damaged by winter frost.
- Avoid hot summer days to prevent stress and sunburn on freshly cut branches.
✂️Tools
Start with pruning shears, your main tool for shaping the juniper and performing corrective trimming. These are ideal for precise cuts and establishing the plant’s basic structure.
For shaping the outer form of the plant, especially larger juniper varieties, use hedge shears. They are perfect for trimming slender, young shoots and maintaining a neat appearance.
If you prefer, you can substitute hedge shears with an electric trimmer, which is especially helpful for very large or dense plants.
When you need to remove thick structural branches, choose a compact garden saw with a tapered blade or loopers. This design allows you to reach deep into the plant’s crown without damaging surrounding branches.
Before you begin, sharpen and disinfect all tools. Clean, sharp tools make smoother cuts and help prevent the spread of diseases, ensuring a healthy pruning process for your junipers.
🌱Trimming Juniper bushes

The simplest way to trim an overgrown juniper is to shape it into a ball or a pillow-like form. This gives the plant an attractive look while requiring minimal time and effort.
In late spring, when new shoots begin to appear, use hand pruners or hedge shears to trim any branches that grow beyond the desired outline.
Be careful not to remove more than 30% of the crown in a single year, as this can seriously harm or even kill the plant.
🌲Trimming Juniper trees
In this section, we’ll cover pruning juniper trees that grow in a vertical form. These types are popular for creating hedges or decorative shapes.
Pruning the top of a juniper tree
You can safely trim the top of a juniper if it grows too tall. Many varieties, like the Blue Point Juniper with its beautiful blue needles, tend to grow higher than some spaces allow. If this happens, simply cut the top down to your desired height. Use pruning shears for thinner branches or loppers for thicker ones.
Raising the crown
Another option is raising the crown by removing the lower branches. Use a saw to carefully cut them off at the chosen height without damaging the trunk. This creates open space beneath the tree, which is perfect for planting shade-loving plants such as hostas or coral bells.

I have skyrocket juniper planted close to and under my eaves. They are getting to tall. How do I prune to shorten the height and shape the then lower branches to taper up to that crowning? How much can I safely remove from the top? And how often can that be done? Wait until spring? Thank you in advance for your help.
Hi Peter,
It is quite difficult to shorten Skyrocket in height and still get a conical shape. I recommend that you cut the top off no more than 25% of the height of the tree.
You can prune now or in early spring. The next season, Skyrocket will produce a new central shoot and in about a year or two it will regain its conical shape.
I hope this helps. If you still have questions, be sure to ask.
