6 Tips to Deal with Camellia Leaf Drooping

Greetings, friends. Today, I will explain why camellia leaves droop and what you can do about it.

QUICK ANSWER: Leaf drooping most often occurs in very hot weather when the soil around the roots is very dry. To correct this, water the camellia and give it partial shade.

1. Provide some shade.

In hot and sunny weather, the camellia can experience temperature stress, which can cause its leaves to droop. Moreover, the leaves may burn if there is too much direct sun.

To cope with this, give your camellia some shade during the hottest part of the day. If it is growing in a pot, move it into partial shade. If your camellia is in the garden, shade it from the south, for example, with an umbrella.

2. Water properly.

Lack of water in the soil is also a cause of leaf droop. This is very common, along with temperature stress during dry weather.

To correct this, water the camellia with 1-2 gallons of water. Do not let the soil around the roots dry out more than 2 inches in the future.

3. Stick to the transplanting rules.

Transplant shock can also cause camellia leaves to droop. To prevent this, stick to the following rules:

  1. Transplant only in early spring.
  2. Transplant in cloudy weather.
  3. Avoid damaging the roots.
  4. Do not prune branches in the year of transplanting.
  5. Water after transplanting.
  6. Provide shade for 1-2 months.

4. Take care of Camellia’s health.

Various pests can parasitize the leaves of camellias and cause them to droop. The same is true for diseases – the leaves of a sick camellia may droop.

Keep a constant eye on the health of your plant and as soon as you see signs of disease or pests, treat it with a remedy. At least once a year, it is best to give your camellia a preventative treatment with fungicides and insecticides.

5. Ensure drainage.

Root Rot

If the soil near the roots is poorly drained and water is retained there for a long time, this can lead to root rot. The water supply to the leaves will be impaired, and they will droop. Root rot can also occur if you water too often.

To avoid root rot, only plant camellias in well-drained soil where rainwater does not collect. Avoid frequent watering and water only when the soil around the roots is 2 inches dry.

6. Use a mulch.

The use of mulch prevents the soil from overheating in the root zone. This will allow the plant to avoid temperature stress. In addition, the soil will remain moist for longer, and the plant will not suffer from thirst.

Use organic matter as mulch. For me, pine bark works best. Spread a layer of mulch about 2 inches in the root zone of the camellia. Avoid having the mulch touch the trunk of the plant.
